Description

I take this proud privilege and honor to introduce this book on Indian Pharma sector “The Impact Of the Proposed Takeover Code on the Indian Pharma Sector “ written by Dr. Gurudas B Natekar which is based on his Doctoral Research Work.

The Indian pharmaceutical industry currently tops amongst India’s science based industries with a wide range of capabilities in the complex field ofdrug manufacture and technology. The Indian Pharma sector ranks very high amongst all other countries in terms of technology, quality, and wide range of medicines that are manufactured.

The pharmaceutical and chemical industry in India is extremely fragmented market with a severe price competition and government price control. The pharmaceutical industry in India meets around 70% of the country’s demand for bulk drugs, drug intermediates, pharmaceutical formulation, chemicals, tablets, capsules, orals and injectable. The Indian pharmaceutical industry is known for its cost effectiveness and competitiveness. The nature of diseases in India is varied and the market is ever expanding and a number of Indian companies have made acquisitions in the global market. The advent of pharmaceutical product patent recognition has changed the ground rules for Indian enterprises and this has resulted in need of new investments and research and development in the Pharma sector. The takeover code of 2011 is a timely and progressive regulation that would facilitate investment and attract investors. The changes in the takeover code made by SEBI have turned domestic drug companies into an attractive acquisition target. These takeovers have now put Indian pharmaceutical sector on the global map.

The government’s Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) policy in respect of pharma sector has been liberal and several changes are being witnessed in the domestic market. One of the major changes that the government and the regulators are looking for is the changes in the takeover code. This change is attempted based on the recommendations of Mr. C. Achuthan Committee. Dr. Gurudas B. Natekar has indeed made sincere efforts to throw light on various important aspects of pharma sector and takeover code. He has carried out research study titled “The Impact of the Proposed Takeover Code on the Indian Pharma Sector”. He has made a thorough and meaningful review of literature pertaining to the proposed takeover code on the Indian pharma sector. Valuable inputs are obtained from pharma units, manufacturers of pharma products and clinicians to accomplish the set research objectives. The whole research work has been conveniently converted to seven chapters namely Introduction, Literature Review, Research Methodology, Regulations of Pharma Industry in India, Profile of respondents, and Analysis of data, Summary, Findings, Conclusions, Suggestions and scope for further research.
